A5 Magazine

What is your magazine about?
Its a non profit tri-annual magazine of creation. Each issue presents works from various fields of art and design based on a given theme.

Who’s behind the project? Tell us about the founders, their backgrounds and their motivations!
We are Keren and Golan Gafni (who also run "Keren and Golan" graphic design studio in Tel-Aviv) and Tali Green graphic designer also from Tel-Aviv.

How do you produce one issue? How much time do you spend on it? How big is your team?
We make a call for submission about 2 months before the deadline, collecting works from all over the world and then editing and designing it. It takes about two weeks from the deadline till its published.

What have been the important steps in the life of your magazine?
Our first issue was a success. We made a call for submissions and were very surprised to see how many people answered our call for a magazine that was anonymous at that time. We printed 1000 copies and spread it for free all around the country as a teaser for the project. And also our participation in the 23rd International Biennial of Graphic Design, Brno, Czech Republic, 2008.

Which are the key ingredients for the success of your magazine?
Well, its a special magazine combining something very urban and well designed. It is also bound in a way you can separate pages easily and hang them wherever you wish... We always present works made by well known as well as unknown creators. Our aim is to make a magazine which is very at eye level, not arrogant, and yet very professional.

What are the difficulties you are confronted with? What would be “the” thing to help the magazine to improve?
I guess that finding budget for it will be great. We are doing it ourselves and its quite hard. But its all for the love of art and design.

Where do you want the magazine to be in five years?
In our 22nd issues after making special edition of volumes 1-10 and 11-20. And after at least two workshops somewhere in the planet.

Tell us about your audience! Who are the readers of your magazine?
Art and design students, Artists, Graphic designers, Poets, Photographers, Culture mice, Fashion lovers, Our family and friends etc.

Is remaining independent important to you? Is it part of the strategy?
Definitely !

What’s your relationship with advertisement? Does it influence your content? Do you care about advertising-driven-editorials?
Our magazine is free of advertisments and we try to keep it that way.

What do you think of your issue 01, when you look back at it?
Every time we start working on a new issue, we have our first issue in front of us as a reminder. We keep developing our issues and still always try to save something from our first issue which was very honest and simple.

Magazine favorite(s) that inspired you in your career?
Rojo, Beautiful Decay, Punctum, Plastic Rhino, Adbusters...

Do you keep old copies of magazines? If so, what is your favorite in your collection?
We always keep copies that we like. We kept 2 issues of Punctum magazine which we bought when we were in student exchange in Budapest. Its a student magazine which made us think about making our own mag.

How many magazines do you buy / get / read each month? Do you qualify yourself a maniac?
We are probably not maniacs enough :)

We are compiling answers from some of the most innovative magazine makers around the world today. Who else should we ask?
Try "Beautiful Decay" if you haven't done it already...
